Powertrain
- Engine: Factory-built to accept the Cummins ISX 14.9L inline-6 (rated in the 400–600 hp range with torque outputs approximately 1,450–2,050 lb-ft). The ISX family features electronic engine management and high-pressure fueling for tunability, fuel efficiency and emissions compliance. The engine is factory-integrated with aftertreatment plumbing and controls required to meet applicable emissions standards.
- Transmissions: Peterbilt configured the 389 to accept common heavy-duty transmissions as factory options, including Eaton-Fuller manual and automated shift units or comparable manufacturer offerings. Final drive ratios and PTO preparations are provided at the factory depending on application.
